Who we are
A retail company with a shepherd’s hut, located in the foothills of Moel Famau, which forms part the beautiful Clwydian Range, a rolling blanket of hills, and the backdrop for North East Wales. We provide locally made refreshments and crafts, along with free tourist information to help visitors make the most of the breath-taking landscape and local area.
Our hut is custom made, a homage to the part-time homes of 19th and 20th century shepherds. Working closely with the AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), we are determined to provide a warm welcome, showcase local produce and creativity, and be a first class eco-tourism destination!
When you next take a walk around the Clwydian Range, be sure to pop in as say hello!
History of the hut
Shepherds Huts were originally used in Wales and the rest of the UK during the 19th and 20th centuries as portable homes for Shepherds through the lambing season. Towed by horse the huts would provide safety and comfort in the most rural of areas up against the harshest weather conditions, making the huts an essential part of rural life.
Throughout the 20th century with the introduction of tractors and other industrial farming equipment shepherds huts began their inevitable decline. Many were left abandoned in farm lands many more destroyed but their heritage lives on all over the country in renovated and re-made Huts.
Not just for Shepherds
As well as being on the Offas Dyke path, Moel Famau is the highest point of the Clwydian range, visitors ‘flock’ here in their thousands each year to take part in a range of activities from walking to para-gliding, as well as the area being a starting point for cross-country races and other events. From The Hut and through Facebook and Twitter we will sign post you on up and coming events, so visitors and enthusiasts will always be in the know.
We are not just a Shepherds Hut for shepherds we are a Hut for everyone!
